Born in Athens. She studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1978–79 and 1984–88) under D. Mytaras, L. Kanakakis, N. Kessanlis, R. Papaspyrou, Leda Papakonstantinou, V. Kyriaki and M. Lambraki-Plaka, and Interior Design at the Fine Arts School of California State University, Long Beach (1980–1983). On French and Greek government scholarships she undertook postgraduate studies in painting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris (1990–1992) as “élève invitée” under Professor Pierre Carron.
Her works can be found in the Greek Parliament, the Greek National Gallery, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Benaki Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Florina, the Fryssiras Museum, the Kouvoutsakis Pinacotheque, the Moschandreou Pinacotheque, the Agricultural Bank of Greece Collection, Piraeus Bank, the AGET Heraklis Collection, the InterAmerican Collection, and other public and private collections in Greece and abroad.
Her work was selected to represent Greek contemporary art during the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In September 2008, as part of the Environmental Programme of the Goulandris Museum of Natural History, she donated a work which was auctioned and acquired by the Greek Parliament.
“You will always ‘hover’ between representation and abstraction,” she was told in 1992 by Pierre Carron, her professor at ENSBA, Paris — a prediction of the direction her work would take. Thematic cycles of her work have been presented in many solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad (USA, China, Ireland, England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Cyprus, Turkey, Bahrain, Dubai, Lebanon, Korea, Republic of Mauritius). She lives and works in Athens.
“…Chryssa creates images which sometimes refer to the traditional landscape, other times are more reminiscent of the lunar landscape of Tàpies, while other times they show a connection with the gestural work of Pollock…”

Versions of the Landscape

Alexandros Philippidis
Photographer
A commentary on the relationship between nature and the city.
A commentary on the human imprint upon the landscape.
An allusion to boundaries, the private and the public, order and disorder, balance, the sublime, the beautiful, the structured, the abandoned, the nurtured.
A commentary on our inherent contradictions, free of denunciatory intent — simply a question, a “photographic” gesture.
Alexandros Philippidis was born in Athens in 1957. He studied economics at the Graduate School of Industrial Studies of Piraeus (now the University of Piraeus). Following his studies and military service, realizing that a career in economics was not for him, he took photography courses at the Focus School of Art and Photography.
He began working professionally in photography in 1988, initially covering nightlife venues and tavernas before transitioning to the print press. He shot for magazines such as Computer Gia Olous, Pixel, and Information. In 1994, he began shooting portraits and photo-essays for Stathis Tsagkarousianos’ 01 magazine. From then until 2017, he collaborated with leading publications, including Madame Figaro, Chaos, Epsilon, Kappa, Esquire, Symbol, and Athens Voice. In parallel, from 2001 to 2017, he was a steady contributor to Kathimerini’s cultural supplements, “Arts and Letters” and “Life and Art”.
He taught at the ESP School under Stavros Moresopoulos from 1997 to 2001, and at the Focus School under Takis Zerdevas from 2003 to 2006. He has presented his work in two solo exhibitions: at “Posidonia 1992” (focusing on the Elefsina Shipyards) and at Gallery 11 as part of the Athens Month of Photography (1997, titled “Holy” Sumatra). Between 1995 and 2014, he also participated in numerous group exhibitions.
